The other day I was showing a co-worker my website.

Since my latest poll concerns online bookmarking, I wanted to show her the Tighter crop on “Share This” logo button you see with each post.

We were viewing the site using Internet Explorer. When I clicked on the Share This button, nothing happened. I realized the browser was using a pop-up blocker. I quickly hit the Pop-up blocker button in her favorites bar to allow us to see the Share This pop-up window.

My friend’s immediate reaction was: Don’t do that! I don’t want you to mess up my system.

An interesting reaction, yet understandable. I calmed her down, letting her know that once we were done looking at this little feature, I would put her Pop-up blocker back on.

She was fine with this thought. So I got to show her this nifty feature, and she seemed genuinely interested.

As much as we end-users dislike pop-up windows, there are a few that are actually useful. Not all pop-ups are ads. Though it sure seems like the vast majority are. So the next time you try to click on something that seems useful and it doesn’t do anything, check your pop-up blocker settings. Turn ‘em off to access that link then reset the pop-up blocker to do its job.

No harm done. Just getting things done! (gtd)
